One Six Nine Café: Royal Apple Pancakes, Randwick (30 Apr 2011)

Nice brunch at a bargain price

A Jigocity bargain deal ($14 worth of Breakfast or Lunch for only $5) brings me to revisit One Six Nine Café for a morning after post Royal Wedding brunch. I notice the courtyard is now open but due to wet weather sadly isn’t being used. My Hot chocolate ($3.50) arrived piping hot which made it a little awkward to pick up in a glass but had good depth of chocolate flavour. I love it when you get a marshmallow on the side as an extra treat. Bananas are too expensive at the moment so I’m suspecting that’s why the banana smoothie wasn't available but the Mixed Berry Smoothie ($5.50) was good with noticeable amounts of honey.

Continuing the royal theme I felt compelled to order the special of the day of Royal Apple Pancakes with honey and ricotta ($12). Nicely presented with cut strawberries that resembled crowns it wasn’t quite what I was expecting but was good. Plenty of apple within the fritter-like pancake mix which kept it moist and full of apple flavour. The Omelette with basil and goats cheese ($12) was quite substantial — I’m suspecting at least 3 eggs were used. Flavours worked well together and the side of avocado ($3) was fresh. There’s a small kid friendly play area on the side which seems well-known to revisiting kids. The service was friendly and atmosphere relaxed although I’m thinking the kid that rode his scooter through the café should have perhaps been disciplined by his mum.

Other visits to One Six Nine Cafe:
30 April 2011 - Mixed berry smoothie, Hot chocolate, Omelette with
goats cheese and basil,
Royal Apple pancakes
25 Sept 2010 - Chicken Club Sandwich, Eggs & Toast with Bacon and Haloumi, Fresh juice
19 August 2010 - Cafe opens

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS:
Friendly service, Lots of gluten-free options, Clean and simple décor, Small kids play area, Courtyard at the back, Reasonably priced, Casual atmosphere
CONS:
Table supports can get in the way of leg room, Pancakes aren’t on the normal menu, Kids can make it a little noisy when left to their own devices
MUST TRY:
Hot chocolate, Mixed Berry Smoothie

Hot chocolate ($3.50) — Gotta love a side of marshmallow
WORTH TRYING :-)

Smoothie with honey, yoghurt and milk with mixed berry ($5.50) — Lots of flavour
WORTH TRYING :-)

Omelette with basil and goats cheese and sourdough toast ($12) with side of avocado ($3)

Royal Apple Pancakes with honey and ricotta ($12) — I'm hoping normal pancakes with a mixed berry compote make it to the menu one day

Inside seating

Courtyard when wet weather permits. I reckon a wall of hanging herbs would be pretty cool like Greenhouse or some colourful wall art or larger potted plants

Window drawing — I like

Cute signage to toilet and courtyard

I'm not a fan of table supports that restrict feet sitting flat

I like casual blackboard facts although I'm not actually sure what FAKT stands for

Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton: High tea drinks, canapés and cakes (29 Apr 2011)

Time for a Royal High Tea

If you're like most of the world that watched the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on their TV and didn't get an official invite like Sir Elton 'Hercules' John CBE, Ian 'Thorpedo' Thorpe OAM, Victoria 'Posh' and David 'Bend It Like' Beckham then check out the up close and personal photos on The Big Picture to give you a great idea of what it would have been like — how amazing does that wedding cake look. To celebrate this auspicious occasion in style I was very privileged to be invited to a high tea of delicious homemade treats. How nice to start with a glass of Henkell Trocken which is one of my non-champagne favourites which went well with the all-time-classic of a Cucumber sandwich with crème fraiche and dill. The Egg salad sandwiches made apparently to a Women's Weekly recipe were excellent.

Homemade Scones with strawberry jam and freshly whipped cream started the sugary intake along with three types of Macarons bought from Adriano Zumbo. Delightful looking Butterfly cupcakes were homemade and decorated with fresh raspberries. The pièce de résistance of the night for me was the Homemade meringues with freshly whipped cream and Persian rose water fairy floss. Fragile to the touch and melted-in-your-mouth with sugary goodness. The rose water fairy floss worked so well on flavour making them very special and fit for royalty. I had to stop myself at two but could have easy eaten a whole platter of them. Matched with Audrey Wilkinson 2010 Moscato that also gets my tick as a favourite.

Chat Thai: Closed for renovations until 1 Oct at The Galeries, Sydney (29 Apr 2011)

Chat Thai heading to Westfield

If you've been a fan of the Chat Thai in The Galeries like me then you'll be sad to know they're closing for renovations until 1 October but their sign mentions they'll have a branch opening in Westfield Sydney on 17 August just down the road. Let's hope the prices remain just as reasonable but I'm suspecting like all eateries in the new Westfield Sydney they'll probably be a bit more expensive. The last time I visited I spotted someone ordering the Kana Moogrob ($8.90) so I thought I'd give it a try. It's quite a delicious sight of chinese broccoli and sliced crisp pork belly but it's the abundance of fresh chilli that has me quite scared. Thankfully it's more a sweet chilli than the heart-stopping variety. There's a decent amount of pork, with some bits more crisp than others. The Duck Noodle Soup ($9.90) has nice depth of flavour in the five-spiced smoked duck stock although being a fatty meat there's also a fair amount of skin which can't be too healthy.

Other visits to Chat Thai:
