New kid on the Randwick block
“Bistro Avoca's philosophy is about enjoying great food and drink at good prices in a relaxed, comfortable surrounding — just what you'd like your favorite local Restaurant to be”
Bistro Avoca takes over the old premises of Elysium and former Porcellino. It’s fans have already given it a thumbs up of 100% ‘like it’ on Urbanspoon and I’d tend to agree. The food is comforting and familiar and the prices seem reasonable enough for the quality and presentation if you're looking for a nice night out. A complimentary glass of wine was being promoted with a main meal helping to make it more attractive to venture in and try.
The starter of Olives in citrus oil, crisp flatbread & hummus ($8) serves well as a light appetiser. My Thai oyster shots with, fresh herbs, ginger, garlic, lemongrass & lime nam jim ($3.50) soon becomes a favourite using a Coffin Bay oyster. Packed with flavour and gone too quickly but with much enjoyment. The Seared sea scallops, cauliflower puree, bacon crumble and pesto oil ($17) is also a favourite combining flavours that simply can’t go wrong. The Tempura fried prawns ($16.50) are lightly battered and fairly crispy using decent sized prawns that are properly deveined. The pickled ginger used in the salad is a nice touch although some of the red onion could have been held back a bit for my liking.
The Confit duck legs ($26.50) lived up to being plural and was tender albeit a little fatty as one might expect. Well-flavoured although mistaking the cumquat as a cherry tomato was meet with a bit of a surprise on my palate. The Oven roasted lamb rump ($27.50) was a hearty dish accompanied with well-matched ingredients. All the desserts are based around timeless classics that make choosing just that little bit harder to decide. Warm sticky toffee pudding, butterscotch sauce & salted almond toffee ($12) had the flavour although the pudding could have been a bit more moist for my liking. I really enjoyed the Crème brulee with strawberries marinated in orange syrup ($12) which was a nice way to finish off the meal. I look forward to revisiting to try some of the other tempting menu items.
